Treatment

From its beginning, the focus of MAXabilitation Inc. has been to provide patient-focused, evidence-based care services. The therapeutic interventions and treatments that are provided at MAXabilitation Inc. are the result of significant and diligent research on the part of our health care team and each of our staff members. MAXabilitation Inc. staff members constantly strive to improve service delivery methods (whether therapeutic or administrative) in order to provide orderly, attentive, efficient and caring services. Some of the services provided by MAXabilitation Inc. are highlighted here.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic services at MAXabilitation Inc. are provided in a supervised, patient-focused environment. Chiropractic services are not limited to adjustments and manipulations. The goal of the therapeutic interventions at MAXabilitation Inc. is to offer a multi-disciplinary evidence-based approach to partner with the individual through the process of disability to maximal ability. The health care professionals at MAXabilitation Inc. are interested in treating each patient as a whole person, not a set of conditions that need to be “fixed.”

Pre-Injection Screening for PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), Botox and Prolotherapy Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain huge reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing, bone regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, and stimulate the wound healing process. PRP injections can be performed in tendons and ligaments all over the body.  Professional athletes have used this therapy with great results with Sports injuries and it has been shown to be helpful with arthritic joints, lower back pain, degenerative disc disease and more specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ACL tears, shin splints, rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis and iliotibial band syndrome. A small amount of your blood is extracted and centrifuged to collect the platelet rich plasma along with important proteins needed for healing. Please call 905-475-8386 to book  an appointment with Dr. Lawson to do a pre-screening for Dr. Ko.

Physiotherapy

At MAXabilitation Inc., physiotherapy therapeutic interventions focus on preventative measures designed to develop and maintain maximum movement and functional ability throughout life. In circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors, MAXabilitation Inc. provides comprehensive rehabilitation programs aimed at thoroughly assessing and treating the injured areas to restore the individual to their maximal potential well-being. MAXabilitation Inc. is priviledged to have Mrs. Donna Fitzpatrick head the Physiotherapy program. Mrs. Fitzpatrick brings years of extensive experience in the fields of Orthopaedics and Sports Injuries and has been actively involved in the Markham community for over 20 years.

Kinesiology / Exercise Therapy

The Exercise Therapy programs at MAXabilitation Inc. are directed by the primary health care practitioner in tandem with recommendations from the referring physician. Kinesiologists implement the program recommendations and directly supervise each individual as the exercise programs are performed. The exercise programs are goal-oriented and progress-focused and are based on current research and development in the fields of Kinesiology, Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology. MAXabilitation Inc. is focused on maintaining its staff educated and knowledgeable in their fields through in-clinic workshops and research as well as continuing education courses and conferences offered through various organizations and regulating agencies.

Registered Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy provides an alternative health option to help alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning, if employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury. Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to gain a therapeutic response. Registered Massage Therapists may use a variety of therapies and techniques, depending on needs and specialties.

Graston Technique® (from www.grastontechnique.com)

The Graston Technique® incorporates a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively detect and treat scar tissue and restrictions that affect normal function. The Graston Technique® instruments are used to enhance the clinician's ability to detect adhesions, scar tissue or restrictions in the affected areas. Skilled clinicians use the stainless steel instruments to comb over and "catch" on fibrotic tissue, which immediately identifies the areas of restriction. Once the tissue has been identified, the instruments are used to break up the scar tissue so it can be absorbed by the body.

Neuro-Emotional Technique® (from www.netbodymind.com)

Neuro Emotional Technique® is based on a proven combination of the latest scientific research and centuries-old techniques used in Eastern healing. By acknowledging the relationship between the body’s emotional health, environmental toxicity, nutritional balance and structural integrity, appreciative patients around the world enjoy better health and well-being. Emotions such as fear, anger, grief and many others can negatively affect us physically long after the original event that caused them. When our body fails to “let go” of these emotions we can find ourselves with unexplained aversions, self-sabotaging behaviours, destructive beliefs, phobias and many chronic physical problems. NET, in essence, is used to identify, and help you let go of, “stuck” emotional patterns which in turn improves your physical well-being.

Deep-Water Aqua Therapy

The MAXabilitation Inc. aqua therapy program consists of performing a variety of cardiovascular and resistance exercises in the deep end of a pool while vertically suspended in buoyancy by a special flotation device (Aquajogger). When suspended in water, the individual can become up to 90% buoyant. This means that exercises can be performed in near weightlessness therefore reducing impact tremendously. At the same time, because the density of water is 12 times that of air, resistance exercise becomes that much more effective. In essence, the individual performing the aqua therapy exercises achieves the benefits of 60 minutes of land-based exercise in 45 minutes. MAXabilitation Inc. is the only facility to offer a doctor supervised aqua therapy program. The programs and exercises are specifically designed for each particular individual to meet specific needs.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, in essence, is a health science which is used to successfully treat both pain and dysfunction in the body.  The goal of Acupuncture is to restore balance between the body’s energy network (often referred to as Chi) and various structures (such as nerves, muscles and joints) as well as its systems (such as circulation and digestion).  When communication in this network becomes “blocked” by acute or chronic injuries or problems, acupuncture (or the stimulation of acupoints) serves to provide healing to the structures and balance to the systems.  Besides traditional needle acupuncture, MAXabilitation Inc. practitioners use electronic stimulation, laser beams or pressure massage to treat an acupoint as needed.  The principle of Acupuncture does not change, only the technique.

Active Release Technique®

ART is a patented soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique that treats various dysfunctions related to muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.  This therapeutic technique focuses on treating overused muscles (and related structures).  Overused muscles can lead to pulls and tears as well as problems associated with accumulated trauma (micro-tears) and muscle hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the muscles).  These conditions in turn lead to the formation of scar tissue which causes the muscles to shorten, become weaker and lose their functionality.  ART is a combination of examination and treatment.  The ART providers use their hands to evaluate the muscles and the related structures.  Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.  ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.  The treatment protocols that have been designed allow ART providers to identify specific problems with targeted solutions for each individual patient.
